Read on for more general information about RSS feeds and how to use them.
What is RSS?
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication." It’s an easy way to widely distribute all kinds of information including blogs, news and media such as images, audio and video. Saving The Sierra provides this service for people who want to keep up with our Blog, Postcards from the Sierra.
You’ll need a news reader application to collect the information from RSS feeds and present it on your computer. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.
Some web browsers such as Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 automatically check for RSS feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to RSS feeds much easier.
To see the RSS feed from this Blog, simply click the small square orange icon at the bottom of any Blog page to display the most recent posts. Every time there’s a new post, the RSS feed will update automatically, so you can see the latest Postcards from the Sierra instantly without having to visit the site.
Next, you need to subscribe to the RSS feeds you want. On our Blog you can subscribe to the whole Blog, to any of our "Talk about . . ." topics or you can follow the posts from any of our bloggers. For the whole Blog, click the orange icon at the bottom of the main blog page. To follow posts about the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, for example, click that topic, then click the orange icon at the bottom of the page displaying all those posts. To follow your favorite blogger, click her name, then click the orange icon at the bottom of the page displaying all her posts. It's easy.
You can subscribe in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. Most sites that offer RSS feeds use a similar orange RSS button, but some may just have a normal web link to the feed.
Help us distribute our Blog, Postcards from the Sierra, as far and wide as possible. Subscribe to our RSS feed service to make sure you stay tuned to the latest information about Saving The Sierra. And tell your friends.
